Aleppo (/əˈlɛpoʊ/; Arabic: ﺣﻠﺐ / ALA-LC: Ḥalab, IPA: [ˈħalab]) is the largest city in Syria and it serves as the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 2,132,100 (2004 census), it is also one of the largest cities in the Levant. For centuries, Aleppo was the Syrian region's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third-largest, after Constantinople and Cairo.
Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC. Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC; and this is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is noted for its commercial and military proficiency. Such a long history is probably due to its being a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia (i.e. modern Iraq).
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping, and there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses"). In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form include the production of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on), the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."

Qudud Halabiya (قدود حلبية) literally means musical measures of Aleppo, is a form of Syrian Arab classical music found in both Arabic poetic form and secular musical genre. The poetic form is based on Andalous-era poetry sung in classical Arabic, and closely related with the Muwashshah.
Qudud Halabiya was originated in al-Andalus. However, it was formed as a musical genre in the Levant, mainly in the city of Aleppo. It was developed by the musicians in Aleppo, based on secular, folk and religious songs.
During the 20th century, Qudud Halabiya was further developed and popularized by many Aleppine musicians including Omar al-Batsh (1885–1950), Abdul Qader al-Hajjar (1917–1993), Bakri al-Kurdi (1909–1978), Bakri Rajab (1910–1979), Sabri Moudallal (1918-2006), Sabah Fakhri (1933), Mohammad Khairy (1935-1981), etc.
Contemporary Qudud Halabiya performers include Mohammad Qadri Dallal, Shadi Jamil, Nihad Najjar, Hamam Khairy, Shahd Barmada, Nadya Manfukh, Subhi Toufic, etc.

Born in Aleppo in 1918, highly esteemed by native Aleppians but scarcely known beyond the city limits, he has almost always lived outside the " star system ". His talent was revealed relatively late on his life, from the seventies on, when he gave a series of concerts in Paris with his group of the time, a vocal quartet known as " The Muezzins of Aleppo ". Ever since then he has received constant requests from abroad, has been appointed principal muezzin of the city and was even decorated in 1996 by Farouk Hosni, the Egyptian Minister of Culture. His lack of interest in promoting his art has actually handicapped him in the past to such an extent that his name is not even to be found amongst those quoted in the two key works on contemporary Syrian music, by Adnân Bin Dhurayl (Damascus 1988...
Travel video about destination Aleppo in Syria. Sturdy walls and gates protect the ancient historic city of Aleppo in Syria. The narrow lanes in the old town, and its many historic buildings, have retained all the character and charm of a mediaeval metropolis. The city has a flourishing economy which is mainly due to its favourable location at the junction of several important trading routes. In 1169 the Umayyade Mosque was re-built at the command of the Zengid monarch, Nureddin, but only its impressive forty five metre high minaret has survived to the present day. The Baits are true architectural gems of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, noble and often palatial-looking buildings that once belonged to the city’s elite classes. Today Aleppo shines out once again in the glory of its ...

Prior to the Syrian Conflict, Travel Tales visited the famed city of Aleppo, Syria losing themselves in a labyrinth of bustling passageways and chatting with merchants and locals. They described their experience a 'magical and memorable' and lucky for us they have gathered up some of their travel videos to share with all of us. So on behalf of Travel Tales, enjoy a excerpt of their time in Aleppo, once Syria's largest and most populated city which sits in the north-western portion of the country close to Turkey's southern boarder and one of the longest inhabited cities with some scholars claiming it dates back to the 6th millennium BC. While it's history is long and vast we offer just a glimpse of life in the ancient metropolis with their video. Video presented by TenMoreSteps Video cre...

Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and various 17th-century madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive, unique urban fabric, now threatened by overpopulation. Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria. The ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra rise up into the desert sky of Syria. The Hadrian Gate was built in the second century A.D. and highlights the glorious past of this once important trading metropolis in the Near East.Flanked by columns, a majestic twelve hundred metre long avenue was once Palmyra’s main street. As with many of the city’s other buildings it also has an impressive theatre that dates back to the second century A.D. and was discovered in the 1950’s. For some years it has once again served as a place of entertainment as each spring it features a festival. Close to the Agora, once a farmer’s market, is Palmyra’s striking main landmark, the Tetrapylon that forms the junction between the main avenue and a side road that lead...

A compilation of photos from members of the group of the Salam Syria Tour during our time in Aleppo in April 2017. We spent time in both the western and eastern areas of Aleppo. The reality on the ground is opposite of what you are led to believe by western governments and media. The reality is that the Syrian War is an orchestrated regime change coup that has been in the works since 2006 and which has used legions of terrorists and extremists as paid proxy armies to do the dirty of the west and allies. The people in Aleppo are rebuilding, are reunited, now that the terrorists have been driven out of their city. A guided walking-tour of Aleppo's major historic attractions took place on Friday, for the first time since the war-torn city was liberated from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS). The tour marked the opening of the tourist season. Around 300 students from across the country alongside local citizens were spotted taking pictures at the compound of the Umayyad Mosque and in front of Aleppo's ancient citadel which is heavily damaged after five years of war. A special concert with music and dancing was later organised for Aleppo citizens at the amphitheater. Aleppo citizen and tour guide, Anushka Arakelyan, said that people hoped that the city "will be the same as it was before the war." "There are no nationalities here. All people love each other; all live together...

Children’s suffering has hit rock bottom in Syria as the conflict reaches six years. The song, which is composed and donated to UNICEF by Zade Dirani, UNICEF Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa, is a message of hope from Syria’s children to the children and people of the world, with a simple request to get their childhood back. The song is performed by 10 year-old Ansam, an internally displaced girl in Syria who was born blind. The song was shot in an area of Syria heavily damaged by the fighting. Children performing as part of the choir are all internally displaced and participate, along with Ansam, in UNICEF psychosocial support programmes.

His lack of interest in promoting his art has actually handicapped him in the past to such an extent that his name is not even to be found amongst those quoted in the two key works on contemporary Syrian music, by Adnân Bin Dhurayl (Damascus 1988...

Sabri Moudallal, Born in Aleppo in 1918, highly esteemed by native Aleppians but scarcely known beyond the city limits, he has almost always lived outside the " star system ". "Evading Destiny" - The Aleppo central prison siege This is a movie I have been working to provide English subtitles for. A quick synopsis: tells the true story about the siege Al-Qaeda, the so called Free Syria Army and Islamist rebels imposed on the Aleppo Central prison back in between 2013/2014. The siege lasted for 13 months with nothing surrounding the prison other than blood thirsty jihadists, minimal food, water, medical supplies, 4500 prisoners to maintain. The heroism displayed in surviving a year-long siege is an example of the role the Syrian Arab Army and its allies played in combating the Western-backed terrorists that threat our way of life as humans. Personally, this story along with many others atrocities has had a big impact on myself in viewing this dirty war Syrians a...

This a recording for a group that is called Nawa Band I invited them to sing at Oriental Landscapes festival in May 2011 «نوا » فرقة تهتم بإحياء ونشر الموشحات والقدود بنوعيها، الديني والغزلي، وتوثيق فصول من الذِّكر المتوارث في حلب، وذلك بمقارنة الوثائق القديمة بالموروث لتقديمها بأقصى أمانة ممكنة، مع المحافظة على الروح والفطرة في أدائها.
